Connect Champaign County Learn More

CONNECT Champaign County is a $48.4 million grant-funded project bringing a network of 584 miles of fiber internet cabling carrying gigabit speed internet speeds (1000mbps!) to thousands of homes, businesses, and institutions throughout rural Champaign County.

The project has three phases and over the course of five years will bring fiber internet connectivity to 2,925 unserved and underserved premises across the County.

Phase 1 is underway right now and will include 620 homes, farms, businesses, and anchor institutions and is anticipated to be completed by the end of 2026. The 110-mile path for Phase 1 can be seen on the red line on this Project Map.

Phase 2A is anticipated to begin mid-2026 and will include 935 additional premises over 180 total fiber miles. The Phase 2 path is the teal line on this Project Map.

Funding for Phase 2B, shown in blue on this map, has been provisionally awarded by the State of Illinois and is awaiting federal approval for $12.2 million from the National Telecommunications & Information Administration’s Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment Program (BEAD). The anticipated timeline for this phase runs from late 2026 through 2030. This phase will reach another 1,370 homes, farms, businesses, and anchor institutions.

This CONNECT Champaign County project is being fueled by $28.7 million in local, state, and federal grant funding.
